Cooking is one of the most personal ways to understand a culture, and our Organic Family Compound Cooking Experience was designed to give you exactly that — not a demonstration behind a counter, but a genuine, hands-on morning spent learning the way Balinese families actually cook at home. The experience takes place in a real family compound, working in an open-air pavilion surrounded by the sounds and rhythms of daily compound life.
The day starts with a guided walk through a local spice market, where our host introduces you to the roots, leaves, and pastes that form the backbone of Balinese cooking. From the market, we head to the compound to begin the real work: preparing bumbu bali, the foundational spice paste that anchors most Balinese savory dishes. Grinding the ingredients by hand and watching a simple paste transform into the base of multiple dishes is genuinely satisfying.
A Feast You Made Yourself
By the end of the class you will have prepared seven dishes together, and the best part of the day is sitting down to eat what you cooked in a quiet courtyard pavilion within the compound. It is a small group or fully private experience, with pickup and return from your accommodation included. Over six unhurried hours, for $50 USD per person, you don’t just taste Balinese food — you learn to make it.
