We start your day early, easing out of the south with a gentle stop in Batubulan village to catch a live Barong & Kris dance performance — Bali’s mythic tale of good versus evil, told through masks, gamelan, and trance. From there, the road curves north into Celuk, where generations of goldsmiths and silversmiths still hammer out rings, bangles, and ceremonial pieces by hand in small open workshops.
The route continues to Goa Gajah, the Elephant Cave, where a carved demon-face entrance opens into a cool stone chamber that has drawn pilgrims and scholars for centuries. Then comes the highland stretch we build the whole day around: Mount Batur. We’ll settle you at a Kintamani viewpoint restaurant for lunch (included) with the volcano and its crater lake spread out below — a caldera still active, still watched by the villages ringed around its base. The air is noticeably cooler here, and we’re never in a rush to leave.
Water, Stone, and the Journey Home
Coming back down, we pause at Tirta Empul, the holy spring temple where Balinese Hindus have come to purify themselves in sacred water for over a thousand years. Our last stop is Gunung Kawi, an 11th-century complex of candi shrines carved directly into a river valley’s rock face, reached by a long staircase through rice terraces.
